NEW: SPINNAKER SKILLS

SPINNAKER SAILING DEMISTIFIED

Thirty years ago I purchased a 16 foot boat with a spinnaker. I took a friend out   that said he knew how to use it and we set it in 15 knots of breeze. While watching him work on the foredeck during the set I let the boat get a little sideways and we immediately broached. We recovered went back to the dock and waited for a lighter day and tried it again. Once I felt I had it mastered it was time to show off. A group of my friends had the same boat, but none had spinnakers. We set off for Lake Geneva. We were going to sail the length of the lake have lunch and sail back. When we launched the wind was blowing down the lake. It was going to be a spinnaker run the entire way. Every one was watching with cameras ready as I set the sail---Sideways! Spinnaker sailing can be a little challenging and the results of a mistake can be embarrassing or expensive. With the proper training and practice in winds appropriate to your experience you can quickly learn to stay out of trouble and then truly enjoy that aspect of sailing.

This course is designed to provide you with the basic understanding of spinnaker sailing. It will provide you with the terminology, step by step procedure, and troubleshooting techniques to master and enjoy this exciting aspect of  sailing. If you own a boat with a spinnaker now this will help you feel confident using it. If you don’t it might inspire you to get one or at least allow you be helpful when sailing on someone else’s boat when they would like to fly one. I truly cannot imagine not having that option and often fly my spinnaker on my Flying Scot single handed or on my 36 footer with 2 or 3 people. On a light air day it brings the boat back to life. In a brisk breeze it adds a major element of excitement.

The course is broken down to 2 individual 1 day courses. You may take one or both.

Day 1: will start with learning the parts of the boat required, and how they are used.  Following that will be step by step instructions covering the packing, the set, the jibe, points of sail and trimming, and the take down. There will be a simulator with a real spinnaker set up in the class room that will allow everyone to witness these functions as they actually happen and then experience them with a real spinnaker.

Price for day 1: $75 per student for Members/ $100 for non-Members

Day 2: will be on the water practice on Flying Scots. On a long windward leeward course we will practice all of the maneuvers switching positions with each cycle.

Price for day 2: $75 per student for Members/ $100 for non-Members

Price for both days: $150 per student for Members/ $200 for non-Members
