Adult Sailing Programs

Adult Learn-To-Sail
Our US Sailing Instructors are committed to helping you learn to sail, familiarizing you with basic seamanship, introducing you to the wonderful sailing community of South Florida and Biscayne Bay, and taking special care that you learn safely and enjoy your new experience. You can expect to learn some basic knots, basic sailing maneuvers, introduction to navigational charts, safety procedures, wind-sensing, right-of-way, nautical terms and the “joy” of sailing.
Our learn to sail class is taught on the “SunFish”, the most popular, one-adult sailboat in the world. You will learn to rig, launch and sail your “own” boat during this course. The SunFish is also a popular “rental boat” at beaches, lakes and bays, giving you further opportunities to experience the joy of sailing once you have completed this course.
Basic Keelboat Course and Certification
The US Sailing Basic Keelboat course is the national standard for quality sailing instruction. This course, taught on a classic 23’ sloop, includes keelboat concepts, boat and personal preparation, boat parts, nautical terms, rigging, sail trim, departure and return under sail, basic sailing maneuvers, points of sail, five basic knots, wind-sensing, use of navigational charts, basic navigation rules, emergency procedures, anchoring, overboard recovery and more. This course is designed to prepare the student for the US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification.
Satisfactory completion of this course will result in a handsome wall certificate and a US Sailing Completion Card.
Basic Keelboat Certification
The basic keelboat course is designed to prepare the student to take the one-day test for the US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification. The practical test is taken on the water, and when successfully completed, an academic quiz of 80 questions (all covered in the Basic Keelboat Textbook) is administered.
Basic Keelboat Certification Challenge
Experienced sailors who do not wish to take the course may challenge the certification procedure to attain the US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification. They must pass the same test as students who have taken the Basic Keelboat course. It is highly recommended that challengers purchase and familiarize themselves with the US Sailing Basic Keelboat textbook. Textbooks may be purchased at CGSC or online at www.ussailing.org.
CGSC Instructors and Coaches are all club members, with at least one member being a fully Certified U S Sailing Instructor. If you are unfamiliar with US Sailing, please know it represents the highest level of professionalism and integrity in the sport of sailing. At Coconut Grove Sailing Club, we are very proud of our affiliation with US Sailing and the level of quality it brings to our programs.
