RACE COMITTEE

DEDICATED TO EXCELLENT RACE MANAGEMENT ON BISCAYNE BAY–“SERIOUS FUN!”

An active group hosting regular meetings, social events & manage 18+ regattas a year. In addition to race management, we conduct training programs for “Newbies” throughout the year. We host several social functions, including the Race Committee Party in August, and our Holiday Party in December.

Call us if we can assist with any of your regattas. Race Committees of BBYRA Clubs frequently work together in support of one another. CGSC Race Committee members conduct world class regattas, and help other Clubs in many of the international and local regattas all over south Florida and beyond. Our Principal Race Officers (PRO’s) have experience in distant ports for major regattas. So, don’t hesitate to give us a call.

We have a very busy season of regattas, from the local club racing in BBYRA, the incredible growth of the youth levels into the international competitions, to the one design fleets making their way into the qualifications for the Olympics, with the advanced qualifiers for most of the fleets coming to us for advancement in the qualifiers, to the incredible growth of the Melges fleets of the Audi Melges 20s and 32s … all run by our Race Committee.

For Upcoming Regattas, please review the Biscayne Bay Yacht Racing Association Calendar to find the most up to date information:  http://www.bbyra.net/calendar.html

Sign up for our email newsletters for announcements of special events that are coming up for most of these top of the line regattas. If you are not receiving our newsletters, please go to sign up below for FREE! Membership not required.

This is going to be one of our biggest regatta seasons yet Hosted by CGSC. Get involved, and sign up to volunteer – on the water or shore-side, or register your boat into a BBYRA event…. wherever you can join into the fun, just come in and explore what we do. Free training given ~ no experience necessary!

US SAILING CERTIFIED RACE OFFICERS

The highest position on a race committee is that of Principal Race Officer (PRO) – the person in charge of the RC on the water. US Sailing, our national sailing authority, has granted their Certified Race Officer Credentials to the following CGSC PRO’s who conduct our regattas according to the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS).

We have developed a very capable group of Principal Race Officers from our ranks at the Club, and we are proud of their leadership. CGSC Principal Race Officers (PRO’s) are:

Susan Walcutt,  Committee Chair

Steve Herman

Nancy Rogachenko

RC TRAINING PROGRAMS

We provide a number of Training Programs to allow our RC members a way to gain satisfying knowledge and abilities, and to help us make sure we have members with skill sets that are needed.

Generally, training for positions such as Flag Signaler, Spotter/Recorder, Sounder, and Wind Reader is done “on the job,” before and during a regatta.

Specific training sessions are provided on the following subjects from time to time during the year whenever we have a sufficient number of interested and capable attendees.

THE TIMER’S ROLE AND FUNCTION – The “heartbeat of the committee,” the Timer directs the starts and finishes.  Usually a two-hour class.

SUPPORT BOAT OPERATOR TRAINING – Any race committee must have people who can properly and safely operate support power boats – ours are 19 ft, center console outboards in order to properly position racing buoys, and relay wind information to the PRO.  Typically, 9 am to 1 pm on a weekend day.

GPS USE AND RACE COURSE GEOMETRY – This goes hand in hand with Operator Training.  We use handheld GPS units to accurately set marks in terms of both distance and direction.  There are specific GPS skills required by these tasks that most GPS users don’t have.  Again, 9 am to 1 pm on a weekend.

PRO TRAINING PROGRAM – It takes about a year for someone to gather the necessary training, expertise and experience to qualify as a US Sailing Certified Race Officer.  Several of our PRO’s listed above are graduates of our “PRO Class of 2007.”  Just as is the case for our other key positions, we want more PRO’s and are happy to provide this training to qualified persons who will join our PRO rotation.
